Jerry Sonnenberg is a Colorado native who has been farming and ranching in northeastern Colorado his entire life. He continues to live and work on the same family farm that both his father and he were raised.
Jerry’s experience as a small business owner, teacher and farmer/rancher has made him a strong voice for rural Colorado in the Legislature. His conservative voting record and his ability to solve problems have have made him a respected leader throughout the state as well as the country. Those traits have also earned him numerous accolades.
Senator Sonnenberg was first elected to the Colorado House of Representatives in 2006 and immediately became a strong, conservative voice for agriculture and rural Colorado. After serving 8 years he was elected to serve from District 1 in the Colorado Senate where he represents the counties of Cheyenne, Elbert, Lincoln, Logan, Kit Carson, Morgan, Phillips, Sedgwick, Yuma, Washington and Weld.
His leadership skills go beyond the legislature as he led the charge in rebuilding and is now the President of the Colorado Agricultural Leadership Program which also organizes the annual Governors Ag Forum. Sonnenberg recognized the importance of training and developing spokespeople for agriculture and rural Colorado and has made it a priority to help provide the tools necessary for future leaders to make an impact.
Jerry was born and raised on his family farm near Sterling, Colorado. He married Vonnie Constance Sonnenberg, a teacher at Merino Elementary School, and together have four children; Ashley, and her husband Chad Renslow of Colorado Springs, CO and their son Seth; Afton, her husband Russel Dains, their daughter, Cambrei and twins Caleb and Cailyn of Arvada, CO; Joshua and his wife Dani and their sons Reno and Taos of Sterling; and Ryan and his wife Thea, and their son Pake, also of Sterling.
